The Little Wellness Arts Center Remembers SHERMAN HEMSLEY

Remembering Sherman Hemsley Words By Raymond Tyler

TV Legend Sherman Hemsley passed away today at age 74.

The Philly native was well known for embodying several iconic TV characters .

As George Jefferson Hemsley represented the men who beat the odds in working their family out of poverty through business.

Years later the role of Deacon Frye on Amen took Hemsley back to Philly (at least as a character.)

Then years later Hemsley played the boss of WE SAY SO on Dinosaurs. Though not as well known as his George Jefferson role, no one could mistake Hemlsey's voice. The show Dinosaurs was much deeper than the way it was marketed. The show Dinosaurs was full of metaphors about how the same things that are killing to earth today such as greed, may have also lead to the fall of civilizations before ours.

Here in this clip from my favorite episode of The Jeffersons , George returns to the apartment he grew up in and accidentally meets the family that lives there today.

In many ways Hemsley's George Jefferson set the table for Bill Cosby's Cliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show) and James Avery's Phillip Banks (Fresh Prince of Bel Air.) I was so proud when Hemsley actually appeared on his friend Avery's show The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air as George Jefferson.

Every time I discuss important images of Black Men on TV, I will speak with pride of Mr. Sherman Hemsely.

A THOUSAND WORDS: Shanelle Gabriel, Blue, and Michelle Moseley

Tonight's Episode: Three's Company
Words and Photo By Raymond Tyler

Here are 3 poets that are just dopity dope...I have spent hours with my mouth open. Being amazed by their words and telling people you need to buy their books and cd's.

So here I go again....

Shanelle Gabriel's Start Something is a CD you and your daughter or niece or auntie need to listen to together.

Brad Blue Bathgate's Corner Store in The Middle Of the Block should be mandatory for everyone who grew up in a hood. I believe it's the official hand book to Harlem.
And Michelle Moseley's CD Hood Approved should be required listening for any young woman who is thinking about calling themselves "WIFEY".
And if you live in the 609 area and don't own Hood Approved?
WTF are doing with your life Boo Boo?

POEM OF THE DAY:"We Made it" by Sunni Patterson

All that matters is this:
Which side will we pick
Which path will we choose
Either win or lose cuz death don’t come in vain
Not for us to remain enslaved or our spirits to remain in cages
It comes so we might be courageous
To fulfill our obligation to our God and all creation
And stand in determination
Able to look death in the face and say
WE MADE IT!
WE MADE IT!
WE MADE IT!
WE MADE IT!
Biography
More than a poet, more than a singer, more than an emcee–it’s not just what she says, it’s how she says it. Emerging from the musical womb that is New Orleans, artist and visionary Sunni Patterson combines the heritage and tradition of her Native town with an enlightened modern world view to create music and poetry that is timeless in its groove.

Sunni has been a featured performer at the many of Nation’s premier spoken word venues, including HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. She has also had the priviledge of speaking at the Panafest in Ghana, West Africa. She has worked with several well known artists and performers including Hannibal Lokumbe- singing lead vocals for his score,”King and the Cresent City Moon,” Kalamu Ya Salaam, Sonia Sanchez, Wanda Coleman, Amiri Baraka, Laini Kuumba Afrikan Dance Company, and many more.
An Aborisha (Omo Oshun) and advocate of Holistic Health, Sunni has trained under such greats as Oluwo Afolabi Epega, Dr. Ndugu Khan (Babalawo Ifa Kayode,) Queen Malikah Sabah (Iyanifa Faadisi Olaolu Olabisi,) Dr.Morris F.X.Jeff,Jr., Nana Anoa Nantambo, Mama Jean Taiwo, Nana Kwabena Faheem Ashanti, Ph.D, and several others. She is a certified instructor of Chi Kung (Qi Gong) and Tai Chi for Health.
There is so much more to say about her, but words just cannot describe her way, her Spirit, her grace, or gift of healing. In every word/sound she utters, you hear the grit and grime, hope and love, problem and solution, optimism and faith. She is a mouth piece for the Ancestors, a vessel used to promote goodness in a world where oppression and injustice seems the order of the day. What a blessing it is to feel her warm and nourishing rays shine light on your soul!
