The Little WAC Remembers Peter O'Toole

Good Night To The Lion In Winter
Peter O'Toole

One of the great actors to have lived in my generation has passed.

Peter O'Toole died Saturday December 14th at age 81.

I first came across O'Toole during the first year my parents had HBO in a film starring O'Toole called My Favorite Year. In this film O'Toole played a man with levels. An aging film star in a Hollywood that had moved on. A man that was already considered a myth and legend but still has decades of real living to do.

I often wonder with actors like O'Toole how much of their talent is pure and raw ability and how much is it that I just love that they play these difficult and many textured people.

Likewise, I just thoroughly enjoy The Lion In Winter. In this role O'Toole stars opposite Katherine Hepburn.
As King Henry The Second , O'Toole plays a king with an ex wife , a new wife and tribe of sons.

He has clearly spend his younger years conquering and and acquiring. Now as a successful king the war is no longer about gaining land, but how he will distribute his material possessions and his remaining love.

O'Toole in The Lion In Winter gave as great a performance s I have ever seen.

I doubt we will ever see another Peter O'Toole during my life.
At least right now, there are no scripts coming out of Hollywood meaty enough for an actor like O'Toole to devour.

Peter O'Tool Obituary Courtesy of The Huffington Post

O'Toole, who overcame a severe stomach sickness in the 1970s, died on Saturday (Dec. 14) at the Wellington hospital in London following a long illness, his agent Steve Kenis confirmed to The Guardian.
The Irish-born leading man of the stage and screen announced last year that he was leaving acting behind, saying, "I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell."
O'Toole was nominated for eight Academy Awards for his roles in "Lawrence of Arabia," "Becket" (1964), "The Lion In Winter" (1968), "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1969), "The Ruling Class" (1972), "The Stunt Man" (1980), "My Favorite Year" (1982) and "Venus" (2006). He allegedly holds the record for the most Academy Award acting nominations without a win. O'Toole won four Golden Globes, a BAFTA and an Emmy, and was the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award in 2003.
"[He was] one of a kind in the very best sense and a giant in his field," Kenis told BBC News.
“His family are very appreciative and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of real love and affection being expressed towards him, and to us, during this unhappy time," his daughter Kate O'Toole tells Deadline. "Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts. In due course there will be a memorial filled with song and good cheer, as he would have wished. We will be happy to speak to you all then but in the meantime if you could give Peter O’Toole the respect he deserves and allow us to grieve privately we’d appreciate it. Thank you all again for your beautiful tributes – keep them coming.”
O'Toole is survived by daughters, Kate and Patricia, and son, Lorcan.

Season's Best: The Carpenters at Christmas

Season's Best looks back at the sights and sounds of Christmas from the quirky to the traditional.
In this case writer Raymond Tyler looks at the melancholy and the memories.

The Carpenter's At Christmas
TV Special!

It's been said that every one can sing. If that's true , can we agree that some people have amazing voices? Further more I submit to you, that in the case of Karen Carpenter, we had a voice that was both amazing and iconic.

Karen Carpenter's voice not only so distinct that it can never be duplicated by other singers,  her voice was so gripping that it's beauty cut across racial barriers. Oh you may not have heard her version of I'll Be Home For Christmas on soul radio across the country, but I know I have been in several homes of people of color that have some music by The Carpenter's with The Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole albums. Karen Carpenter's voice is also iconic in that it speaks directly to your heart in a way that grips it. Her voice speaks to your heart in ways that words can not fully explain. She made you stop and listen.

So when I think of Christmas' of my youth? I have to reflect on The Carpenter's TV Specials. At Christmas was a quaint little special that was broadcast in 1977.

At Christmas starred siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter doing what they did best. Richard providing her musical mastery on the piano as his sister Karen made every song she sang a gem with her name etched on it.

The special is as corny and sappy as any you will ever see. There are great and equally bad jokes from Harvey Korman (The Carol Burnet Show and Blazing Saddles.) And almost every TV special had to have a appearance by Kristie Mc Nichol ( the 1970's version of Miley Cyrus with out the strip tease and trying to get "street cred"

The Carpenter's At Christmas is a beautiful snap shot of "Hollywood" Christmas with dancing and pageantry.

Most of all it was a great way to enjoy some quality TV with the family.

The Season's Best: Lena Horne's Gap AD

Lena Horne will forever be our queen not only at Christmas

SEASON'S BEST: LENA HORNE's GAP ADD

As we come closer to Christmas, The Season's Best will celebrate art, movements and moments of the holiday season.

No better way to start off than with this gem from the late Lena Horne.

Though only 31 seconds long I add it to my holiday play list each year.

If Miss Horne was still with us I would have tried to get her to do a 31 second spot for The Little WAC.
Though only 31 seconds, we still see the beauty and class that made Lena Horne the closest thing we had to American Royalty.

She will always be our queen.

The Little Wellness Arts Center Remembers FILMATION creator LOU SCHEIMER

Words by Raymond Tyler

Louis Scheimer (October 19, 1928 - October 17, 2013) was an Emmy and Grammy Award–winning American producer, one of the original founders of Filmation, an animation company, and also credited as an executive producer of many of its cartoons.

Personally as a child, I recall my brother Mark and I spending hours being inspired by the long list of Filmation shows from Fat Albert to Super Friends to rushing home every day after school to watch He Man.

As an adult when I heard Mr. Scheimer tell his story of how in 1966 he faked his way through a meeting with DC comics to launch the first ever newly produced Saturday Morning cartoon, it inspired the business man in me.

When DC gave Filmation the reigns to make The New Adventures of Super Man it changed cartoon and broadcasting history forever.

Filmation and Mr. Scheimer's success is proof that every one does not hit their peek at 20, and that sometimes when you are so close to giving up...world changing opportunity can be at hand.

It's best to hit the video and listen to the funny story of how Filmation was built around The New Adventures Of Super Man.

I just want to say thanks Mr. Scheimer for all of the inspiration, laughs, and adventures through the years.

Raymond Tyler

I suggest this clip for any one in any business. It is funny but very inspiring.

Just Another Minstrel Show

Mammy With A Better Weave....

An editorial about why Raymond Tyler believes Scandal puts a negative spin on black women and his thoughts on images of people of color on film in general.

Let me start by saying...many of you that support Scandal will just read the title and start going off before you read a single word. For those that respond with out reading I will disregard.

Next let me say, that the reason for this article is not to get anyone that enjoys SCANDAL to stop.
If you love it, you should. Keep watching it if it makes you happy. I mean that.

I am writing this article because a couple of days ago I just asked the question on my facebook,
Does The Olivia Pope Character Make Black Women Look Bad?

I got so many people telling me I was "this", and "that" and accusing me of a lot of silly things.
So many black women defended the show like I was attacking the show which I never did.

I don't think any of Scandal's defenders ever answered the question.

I asked the question because I really wanted to discuss the image of a 21st Century Black Woman that is being presented in the show.
I just wanted to understand, so few women thought so little about this image.

Maybe I am just old, because it seems today's athletes, musicians and actors will do anything for  a dollar and no regard to whom it hurts.

I under stand guilty pleasures. I watch a ton of things that are important to no one but me.

I enjoy Adam West's Bat Man...but I am not under the delusion that it's Shakespeare.

I also enjoyed The Wire.

I am not under the delusion that the show made Black people look anything but bad.
The Wire did not just cast blame and shame on "corner boys" but on "journalists" too.
So The Wire DID INDEED MAKE BLACK PEOPLE LOOK BAD.

I do not accept the old argument "well white people do it too."
I am also not a fan of Don Draper or Walter White.
In fact I think the current state of television is in a sorry state because the creators seem to be racing to create characters of all races and genders base, common, and nasty.

I would however, accept the argument that Olivia Pope is so over the top she is almost a cartoon character...I love characters like that myself.

I do believe you can write a character that is complex, that is flawed but that I would want to sit down and have dinner with. Neither Don Draper, Walter White, Omar Little or Olivia Pope are people that I would bother to shake hands with.

________________________________________________

Since the 1915 film Birth of a Nation. People other than African Americans have felt obligated to show the world who WE are.

The one place we are allowed to be complex, real, and deep, in character development has been on stage in my opinion.

My belief is that if there were more balanced images of Black Women on TV? The character of Olivia Pope would not be such a sore spot to me.

What hurts infinitely more is when Black Women react like there is something wrong with me for not being supportive of a such a high profile and destructively iconic representation of a Black Woman on TV.

What almost makes me upset is when they admit they believe Olive Pope is the best they can aspire to and seem to ignore the many great women that built this country.

I know many great Black Women and none of them would be on TV fighting and cussing each week and allowing some one to define that as "reality television." I also believe that as great as they are they aspire to be more than mistresses with good jobs.

You can write off Scandal as Guilty Pleasure TV. I indulge myself in programming that makes us look bad.  However lets be for real and admit Scandal (like some of the shows I watch) does not present a lifestyle that we would want for our children.

Five Things I love Right Now...

Okay so as always I ask you to share things that YOU love.

There are many artists that are making great work because it is important...not because they want to be famous or rich.

So here are the five things I am loving RIGHT NOW.

1. The Kid President

Before he was a muffler spokes person I was following Kid President thanks to actress Kim Coles.

2. Sweet Black Berry

You all remember "Hillary" from Fresh Prince Of Bel Aire?

Well since her Bel Aire days actress Karyn Parson has moved to New York and she has started Sweet Blackberry.com. Sweet Blackberry is a movement to keep little known stories of Black History Alive.

You can visit the site and learn, teach some things to your kids and even help support.

We love Karyn Parsons, Sweet Blackberry and Hillary Banks...and we can not suggest strongly enough that you support this movement.

Number 3. Blaq Mel

Four years ago when I started spinning Blaq Mel's song SITUATION on my radio show,  I thought that I would be attending his GRAMMY PARTIES by now.

Blaq Mel flies in the face of today's watered down R&B.

Mel is dripping with HOT BUTTERED SOUL.

In 2014....I am getting back on my campaign to make sure you all have some Blaq Mel in your music collection.

Number 4. KT BORDERLINE's single FRESH IN THE CLUB

Finally some fresh new indie hip hop.

A must have for your Friday /Saturday Night.

Or for those of you that turn your mirror to "the club."

KT Bordeline I hope is the future of hip hop...can you say fun, fresh and exciting.

No one is shot during the filming of this video.

Number 5. The Goldberg's

I tuned into ABC for Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD and decided to give The Goldberg's a try.

Think The Wonder Year's in the 80's.

The Goldberg's successfully merges to angst of family life presented by Married With Children with the golden parts of family life shared with The Cosby Show.

For me that was the 1980's.

Not as mean as Married With Children and not as perfect as The Cosby Show.

The Goldberg's also reminds me of two great shows featuring Fred Savage, The Wonder Years and his brother Ben Savage's show Boy Meets World.

Check out the pilot episode
6. Would Be Arsenio.
But I am going to write about The New Arsenio Hall Show Next Week.

5 Things I Love Right Now By Raymond Tyler

Five Great Books Of Poetry.

Raymond's Note: The reason I started 5 Things I Love Right Now is because I come across so many wonderful things in my life and the internet, facebook, twitter are wonderful ways to advance arts, positivity and great businesses.

It is my hopes that you will be inspired to share things you love by great people on your space.

I can tell from the response from the first installment we did last week, that the people I mentioned appreciated the endorsement.

This week I wanted to do books but I had so many great books to write about it could have been 500 Things I Love Right Now. So I will share some of the other books I wanted to write about that were not poetry at a later date.

   1. Crossing Waters By Ray Garman
Garman's style of poetry is brilliant and blunt. He uses his words to connect us at the hip to people we would like to forget like vets that find themself with out home or country in America.

From "What Do I Know."
The Man's A Vet,
he's had it rough,
back long enough
to feel that stuff
of jungles
                                           and rifles
                                           and friends
                                           who stayed.

                                            His wife
                                            and children
                                            the screams
                                            and dreams
                                            or why he drinks

2. Ghetto Politics  By Bernard Collins

You may have to contact Bernard Collins personally to get a hold of this book. Ghetto Politics came out long before self publishing sites like Lu Lu and Create Space.

Back then a young poet's publisher was Kinkos.

That Collin's felt his words so important that he used what means that were available to tell his story makes this book even more precious. However, do not be fooled. Ghetto Politics is a collection of poetry and art that is a poetic post card from the fringes of a man's world. My favorite piece is SUPER NIGGER a comedic look at stereo types of Black men in America vs. the sense of regal manhood that used to dominate the black arts scene of the early 90's before Bay Boy Records took over hip hop.

Super Nigger DOES NOT PLAY HOCKEY
Super Nigger's Kryptonite comes in the form of a book
Afraid he might lose his supernigger powers if he opens it up
to take a look

3. I Just Explained What Heaven Is By Bruce Jennings

Bruce L. Jennings is not just a poet. Jennings uses the language of poetry and words to show the world what a complex and complete black man is like. This collections brings us into Jennings' world of God, Family and Culture.
This book is literally bursting at the page with poetic jewels.
It's hard to pick one poem to highlight but here's a funny portion of Old Souls

my soul remembers
when love was behind the movie theater
with that first peck at dusk
when the moon caressed your face, her face
nah...that was just moms flashing her high beams

4. Psalms in L Major by Ti Kendrick Randall (now TK Hall)

Imagine if you will a poet, that visions herself as a profit rather than a underground rock star. Picture a woman that wants her words to be as valuable and viable as scripture rather concerned with how slick her rhyme scheme is.

Psalms In L major is written proof. Is the truth crammed into 83 solid pages. Like David's Psalms, Mrs. Hall's scripture is adorned in glorious words that flow like music...these words tend to be more for healing than for warring.

Here is a portion of a favorite....

Shall We Dance

i write my perception of you
oh, I know the real you
ain't willingly up on the pedestal i put you on
but you needn't worry
you're safe

5. The Dancing Bear by Laura McCullough

Laura's writing I like call...."I Never Thought About It That Way."

Most things I read I see the logic in it immediately and it almost hits me in the face. Laura McCullough's work forces me to dig beneath the surface of the ideas I have in my mind. I like her words because that make me re arrange the thoughts in my head. Make me pull out the sledge hammer and make room for different trains of thought.

Like Gill Scott- Heron almost every time I read one of McCullough's poems I want to sit right down and write her back.

Here is a portion from her title poem The Dancing Bear.

What are the demons
to be grappled with

and how do we meet them?
In a bar on some swivel

stool watching a wet
T-shirt contest with out

irony or in the convenience
store for the lovely

inconvenience of getting
ice-cream at half past ten.

Honorable Mentions

There were several books and poets I will share with you at another time but I still wanted to shout out.

Naila Mattison's Lyrically Gifted should have been the first and only book of poetry award 5 Mics by The Source.

Performance poet Shyster's collection of CD's Entitled Mrs. Betty's Son are what you get if you fused Rakim/Biggie with KRS One and The Last Poets. Shyster is a force of nature in a world where spoken word seems to be shrinking.

Ron Kipling Williams book Aware and Outraged would have been on this list but I could not find the book to take a picture of it.
Trust me when I say Williams work with make you mad at him or yourself. Whatever you believe Williams' words will challenge that and push you closer to your God and the ideas you serve.

Please contact all of these great writers and purchase their past and current work.
